An Adaptation of the Myth of Echo and Narcissus
Written by Joe Salvatore Directed by James Vesce Choreography by Tai Dorn Lighting Design: Jonathan Dillard Costume Design: Elizabeth Thomas Sound Design: James Vesce Twilight Repertory Company Robinson Dance Lab, UNC Charlotte THE STORY While Kim is painting Alex for a class project, she is steadily falling for him. In the meantime Matt, Alex’s partner, prepares to move out and end their year-long relationship. Both Kim and Matt recognize that Alex is incapable of returning love and affection. In Joe Salvatore’s empty this modern-day love triangle is textured by dance-chorus interludes that reenact the mythological tale of Echo and Narcissus in song and movement. PRODUCTION NOTES Written by New York-based artist and educator Joe Salvatore, empty received a staged reading at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the Spring of 1998. Salvatore had in mind a layered tale in which the fragments of the myth of Narcissus and Echo would be told alongside a modern-day love story. The production features sparse scenic elements and a large dance floor as it explores the ongoing dynamic between text and movement. Twilight Rep premiered empty in May of 2005 in UNC Charlotte's Robinson Hall Dance Lab. |
